What really is the rationale to Nigeria's democracy day? I find myself just sitting at home this morning because it is a public holiday. I quite understood the children's day on May 27 with children jumping around everywhere at Mr Biggs, Finicky, TFC and the amusement parks. But with democracy day, what is it really all about?
Democracy day was started by President Obasanjo during his tenure to mark the fact that democracy has come to rest in Nigeria despite the many failed civilian govts in the first and second republic. May 29 is the date when Obasanjo was handed over the mantle of the President by the former ruler General Abdusalami. It has become the official date for handing over office from an outgoing President to an incoming one. Perhaps, that's something worth to celebrate. We should at least thank God that our democracy is working and that we are still ONE country despite the fact that we are so diverse. When you think of the many nations in Africa which are either in war, recovering from it or have a high rate of genocide, then you should thank God for Nigeria.
Good People. Great Nation.
Happy Democracy day..
