A LOT of people have their systems crashed after a period of use and don;t know what to do solve the problem of rebooting their system. It is not wise to just install a new version of windows on your system in such a way to wipe out your old files. You can install the same version of windows which you have from a cd pack and run it from the start up in bootable mode. When asked for the kind of install you want, choose upgrade but be careful not to upgrade with say a win 2002 when your system is installed with a win 2004 as it may delete your old files. you may however uograde with a win 2002 on a system already carrying a win 2002 and this will replace any lost or corrupted files that may be hampering your system's normal operations. This would basically solve most problems you have with a bad system. If however your old files are infected with a virus that would not allow any installation, the other option is to reformat your entire hard disk, but before then you should back up your old files on an external drive like flash drives before installation afresh and then make sure you also add an antivirus like Norton's. If it's not a serious infection, you could easily remove your hard drive as master and scan it with another drive that is a master that has an antivirus software on it and this will eliminate the virus since it is operating in the now designated slave disk.
